Highlights of Smyrna Assembly History
Started by Pastor Don Carter in 1972. Original meeting place was the old Methodist church on College Street by the Old Rock School.
1977 - H.C. Meek Comes as pastor.
1980 - Land is purchased on Nashville Highway for a new building. This land is later condemned by the state and purchased to make the ramp off of the new Nissan Blvd onto Nashville Highway going north.
1981 - The current land is purchased on the corner of Rock Springs Rd and Old Nashville Highway. There is great concern over it being too far out of town.
August, 1982 - The first phase of the building is complete. This includes from the present Toddler Room down to the new Education wing. The Dance Room and Royal Ranger Pioneer room were one large room serving as the sanctuary.
June, 1985 - The first sanctuary was built. At the dedication on July 21st Mayor Sam Ridley was in attendance and Rev Billy Jones from First Assembly in Clarksville brought the dedication Message.
July, 1988 - Ronnie Meek comes on staff as the pastor. H.C. Meek retires. In the fall Margaret Meek becomes the Director of Christian Education (DCE) as an unpaid staff position.
June,1989 - Bruce Coble comes on staff as Assistant Pastor.
January, 1990 - First Assembly of God become Smyrna Assembly. We vote to become a sovereign assembly (before we were under District Supervision) and we adopt our current Constitution and By-Laws.
January, 1994 -Carl Howard becomes part time Worship Leader.
Fall,1994 - Dennis Mahoney comes on staff as part time Youth Pastor.
January,1995 - Margaret becomes part time paid staff as DCE. Wayne Berry comes from Belmont Church to be part time staff as Worship Arts Pastor. In the Spring Wayne’s position is upgraded to full time.
January,1998 - Dennis and Margaret become full time.
December, 1998 - First production of Lamp Lighter’s Theatre.
February, 1999 - The new Education Wing becomes operational.
May, 2000 - Dennis Mahoney resigns as Youth Pastor to start a new church. In June Richard Jacobson is hired as Youth Pastor.
June, 2002 - The Heart/Vision/Sacrifice campaign begins to raise funds for the new Ministry Center.
October, 2004 - Rob and Taria Baughman come on staff to pastor the Youth.
October 31, 2004 - The first service is held in the Ministry Center.
November 14, 2004 - The Ministry Center is dedicated. Featured speakers are:Bishop Eddie Turner (TN District Assemblies of God), Pastor Donald Carter (Trinity AG Bradenton, FL), Father Ray Kasch (All Saints Anglican, Smyrna TN), Pastor Amos Howard (Mt Zion Baptist Smyrna, TN), and Pastor Maury Davis (Cornerstone Church Madison, TN). Also honored in the service were Rev H.C. Meek and his wife Margaret. This was Sister Meek's last time to attend a church service before going home to be with the Lord on 11/25/2004.
November 2005 - Barbie Loflin becomes the Assistant Pastor.
July 8, 2007 - Rev. Harvey Carlton Meek with to be with the Lord.
October, 2007 - Rob and Taira Baughman resign as Youth Pastor. Isaac Meek and Aaron Shaver come on staff to pastor the Youth.
October 2007 - Kevin O'dea become the Assistant Children's Pastor heading the Cool Church.
January, 2009 Kevin is named Young Adult Pastor.
